Technical Information – PVC Photographic Backdrops:
PVC (Poly Vinyl Chloride) material is very durable. It’s particularly popular among studio photographers because PVC fabric is wrinkle-free and fairly easy to clean.
If you ever used standard cotton or muslin material, then you’d know the tortures of creases and washing. To wash, hang up and iron a wet 3 x 6m cotton backdrop burns as many calories as running a marathon. Worse still is attempting to Photoshop out the creases and wrinkles. If you don’t have the lights to blast the crinkles to heck, then your mouse-clicking finger is going to work overtime.
PVC backdrops however can be abused and cleaned continuously for a stretch period of time. A damp cloth/mop and some cleaning agents will do the trick. The heavy duty fabric is heavy and thick enough to minimize creases and wrinkles.
Important Notes to remember:
A 50mm diameter aluminium crossbar is included with each PVC backdrop. The cross bar can be mounted onto any light stands with stud/spigot tops. Sturdy light stands are however recommended because the total weight of a large PVC backdrop is more or less 12kg.
Do not use weaker or thinner crossbars. It may cause the PVC to sag slightly which will result in creases.
The PVC has a back backing, but it shows a lot of sheen (reflection) when exposed to light. It’s best to find an alternative form of material such as velvet if you want to work with a black backdrop.
To clean the PVC use a mop, scrub brush or damp cloth with a cleaning agent. Ammonia (Handy Andy), Pine Gel, Window cleaner (Windowlene) etc. will do the trick just fine.
PVC material does not like scuff marks. They are troublesome to get out. If possible, ask anyone who’s wearing shoes that may incur scuff marks to please remove them. Otherwise, ask the person not to drag their shoes across the fabric. If all else fails – you may use Paint Thinners (E Thinners) to remove any stubborn scuff marks with ease. No damage done whatsoever!! What should NEVER go near your PVC Photographic Backdrop is ACETONE (commonly known as “Cutex Remover”). This will destroy your backdrop in seconds.
Any pen, crayon, cake icing, food colouring and related marks are virtually impossible to remove.
Pinch marks are difficult to remove. Do not fold the PVC or clamp it in any way. If any pinching occurred the leaving the PVC out in the sun may help.
Duct tape the bottom end down on the floor to prevent pinching and creasing.
